Across from my apartment is a building for young unmarried women who study or work in the city. The women in the building are veiled, and even the green wooden shutters in front of their windows are always kept shut. The only time the women appear is to hang their clothes out on the clothesline under the windows.
Yesterday the outside of the building was full of light blue cotton underpants, pink T-shirts with high round necklines, colored socks and a bath towel with a comic strip figure printed on it. Something else hanging on the clothesline that was slightly incongruous was a small sleeveless shirt with a low-cut neckline and a tiger motif.
The cotton underpants, socks and pink pajamas disappeared later that day, but the shirt with the tiger motif stayed there.
I got the impression that the person who owned it didn't dare bring it in, and this made me even more curious as to whose shirt it might be. The next day it was still hanging there, however, as if it had been forgotten. But when I woke up very early this morning to go to the bathroom, I happened to see the owner of the tiger shirt appear from behind the green shutters. She was wearing a black headscarf pulled way down over her face. After looking first to the right and then to the left and stealing a quick glance upward, she quickly snatched the shirt from the line and pulled the shutters closed.
