On its last legs.

I watched a cat die

It was a sunny afternoon, the last sounds of Friday prayers echoing in the background, when a skinny cat came out from under a parked car and walked up the street with tiny steps. I stood still. His narrow head hung down and his eyes were squeezed into little slitI watched a cat die. It was a sunny Friday afternoon, s. His gray fur was bunched together on his body in clumps and his tail looked like an old stick. He crossed over to the warm side of the street. In the sunlight he raised his head a bit and stopped. A car came riding by, but the cat didn't look up or around. The driver honked a few times and then drove in an arc around the animal.
When the car had disappeared and it was quiet again in the street the cat started to retch. His tiny body contracted as if there was something bigger than himself inside. From his mouth came a thick string of mucus, and then very suddenly the animal's legs gave out as if they were folded paper. It fell on its side, never to get up again.
